HOW TO

This is a cheek swab test which has two swabs.  The insert in the kit has instructions on how to:

​

  • Collect DNA from your cheek

  • Break the swab

  • Insert the Q-tip into the vial
     

Quick Tips 

  • It is best to do it in the morning before you drink, eat, chew gum or brush your teeth.
    -If you have just consumed food or done any of the above, wait for 30 minutes.

  • Make sure to swab your cheek sides.

  • Swab for 30-60 seconds on your cheek.

 

Note: If you wear any dental retainers, etc., remove those before you swab and try not to touch any metal that you may have in your mouth…  

 
 

HOW TO DNA TEST

  1.  WATCH VIDEOS BEFORE YOU DO THE TEST

     There are two types of test with FTDNA, make sure you watch the right video.

     2. FILL OUT THE FORMS
 

  • Sign and fill out the green release form.

  • Fill out the FTDNA contact form.

  • Fold up documents and add them into the clear plastic bag, make sure you close it.

 

    3. CREATE ACCOUNT ON FTDNA 

    In order to get your DNA result and be notified of close and immediate matches, you need to create a login for FTDNA (FamilyTreeDNA)


    *Temporary password: Will be emailed when your kit ships.

  • Go to www.FamilyTreeDNA.com. Log in with your DNA kit number and temporary password *

  • Create a new password, erase the 325KAMRA email address, replace it with your own email address to personalize your account and get notifications and updates!

Processing kits can take up to a couple of months, since the kits are being shipped to the US, so please be patient.

WANT MEDICAL REPORT?

If it is medical information that you seek, you can upload your raw DNA data to the Promethease Website and it will give you a health report based on your genome. This is not FDA approved or meant to be a medical diagnostic tool but to be a research based tool. The Promethease report costs $12 USD.



WHEN DNA RESULT IS READY

You will receive an email from FTDNA when your DNA kit has been processed if you updated the email address associated with the kit.


Make sure to check your spam filter as well.
 

 

WHAT CAN I DO NOW?
 

There are options for uploading your data in order to search in other DNA databases as well.

Your data can be downloaded from FTDNA as a zip-file and uploaded to GEDmatch.  We recommend downloading the Build 37 Concatenated.

(Autosomal includes chromosomes 1 through 22

Your X chromosome raw data only covers the markers on the X chromosome.
The raw data concatenated includes the autosomal DNA for Chromosomes 1 through 22

As well as the X chromosome.)
